Hiking
If you head 26.2 miles east of Ogden’s Historic 25th Street, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Wasatch Range, just below a beautiful mountain reservoir.
You’ll be standing at the start line of the Ogden Marathon, known locally as “Utah’s Spring Run-Off.”
At the firing of the cannon, you’ll begin a gentle downhill race that parallels the South Fork of the Ogden River until it enters the lush Ogden Valley and circumnavigates the stunningly beautiful Pineview Reservoir through the idyllic communities of Huntsville and Eden. You’ll continue to follow the Ogden River through Scenic Ogden Canyon. A dramatic waterfall at the mouth of the canyon will welcome you back to Ogden as you jump on the Ogden River Parkway and head back to Historic 25th Street.
It’s a course that Runners World magazine voted as one of the Top Ten Marathons in the World, and “one of the best courses in America for first-time marathon runners.” Similarly, Shape magazine weighed in, proclaiming it the “Fifth-Best Marathon in the Country for Beginning Marathon Runners.” Legendary marathoner, Jeff Galloway ranks it as the 6th most scenic race in America in his book, “America’s Best Places to Run.”
But enough about the course and its surrounding beauty. All along the way, you’ll be supported by a legion of enthusiastic volunteers and encouraging locals…a different kind of beauty as any marathoner can attest. Once across the finish line, dozens of volunteers are standing by to aid your recovery in the shade of the mighty trees that surround Ogden’s Municipal Gardens. After that, a gentle stroll through the independently owned restaurants, brewpubs, art galleries, and shops of 25th Street eases your legs back to normal.
In short, if a marathon is on your bucket list, Ogden is the place to check it off.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is this race good for first-time marathoners?
Yes — and it's not just us saying so. Runner's World named it one of the Top Ten Marathons in the World and specifically called it "one of the best courses in America for first-time marathon runners." Shape magazine ranked it the fifth-best marathon in the country for beginners. The course's consistent net downhill and stunning scenery give first-timers every advantage.
What's the elevation profile like?
The race starts at approximately 5,900 feet in the Wasatch Range and finishes near 4,300 feet in downtown Ogden — a net drop of roughly 1,600 feet over 26.2 miles. The descent is gradual and consistent, not steep, which means you get the speed benefit without wrecking your quads. Note: the high-altitude start means runners coming from sea level should plan to arrive a day or two early to acclimate.
Where does the race start and finish?
The start line is 26.2 miles east of downtown in the South Fork of the Ogden River drainage, deep in the Wasatch Range. The finish line is at Ogden's Municipal Gardens, adjacent to Historic 25th Street. Shuttles connect the two.
How do I get to the start line?
Runners take official race shuttles from downtown Ogden — personal vehicles are not permitted at the start. Shuttles begin running in the early morning hours on race day. Confirm exact times and boarding locations at ogdenmarathon.com.
What happens after I finish?
Volunteers at the finish line will help with mylar blankets, water, food, and recovery support in the shade of Municipal Gardens. From there, Historic 25th Street is immediately accessible on foot — independent restaurants, brewpubs, coffee shops, and galleries are all within a short walk.
Is there a half marathon or other race distances?
Yes. The Ogden Marathon weekend includes a half marathon, 5K, and kids' races in addition to the full marathon. Visit ogdenmarathon.com for full distance options and registration.
What's the weather like in mid-May?
May in Ogden typically brings mild temperatures in the 40s–60s°F at race time, with crisp mountain air at the start. Afternoon temperatures rise, but most runners finish well before the heat of the day. Light layers at the start are recommended — you can check gear at the start line.
Can my family watch me race?
Absolutely. Spectator access along the course is available at several points, and the finish line at Municipal Gardens is a great gathering spot. Many families make a weekend of it — Pineview Reservoir, Ogden Canyon, and downtown Ogden all offer plenty to do while you're logging miles.
