Inaugural USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships at Powder Mountain

Inaugural USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships at Powder Mountain

Ogden, Utah (February 4, 2015) – The stoke factor is high in the biking community for the first ever USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships taking place February 14th at Powder Mountain Resort.

Amateur competitors will ride a 12 mile course that covers + 772/ -748 vertical feet across Powder Mountain’s Hidden Lake in the heart of the Wasatch Mountains. Pro and open class riders will accomplish a total of 18 miles immediately following the amateur competition. Fat bikes have emerged as the fastest growing segment in the cycling community in North America. Originally created to handle the rough Alaskan terrain, these bikes get their name from wide or fat tires built specifically for snow, mud and ice.

“Powder Mountain is elated to be hosting the inaugural Fat Bike National Championships,” says Tim “Fuzz” Hall, Powder Mountain Sports Marketing Manager. “This being a new sport, we have put a lot of time in developing the ideal course and analyzing snow conditions. It’s sure to push the rider’s abilities and fitness throughout the day. Whoever wins the race will deserve the USA Cycling stars and stripes jersey.”

The SRAM Gold Rusch Tour will kick off festivities on Thursday, February 12th with a women’s specific gear clinic at Powder Mountain’s Hidden Lake Lodge. Rebecca Rusch will teach women how to prepare to ride a fat bike with professional tips on what to wear, how to change gears and overall bike mechanics. Following the clinic, women will have the opportunity to take an easy spin on the trails with Rusch and other expert coaches.
On Friday, February 13th from 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. the public will have the opportunity to ride Powder Mountain’s course on free fat bike demos provided by Borealis and local bike shops. Groups will be split into all levels, experience and comfort based. Later that evening Rebecca Rusch will be meeting the public while signing her book “Rusch To Glory” downtown at the Courtyard by Marriott.

Saturday, February 14th the amateur event will start at 9:00am followed with open races at 1:00pm. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy race day with a top-shelf view of the course or wander through the expo village that will include Volkswagen, Rockstar, Sierra Nevada, Borealis, Bar Mitts and local favorites Roosters, Daily Rise, The Bike Shoppe and more. For those looking into a fat bike of their own, Rockstar has provided an opportunity for those in attendance to win a fat bike. Borealis and local bike shops will once again provide free fat bike demos.

Online registration is open through February 11. Registration is available on February 13 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Ogden and on the 14th at Powder Mountain Resort.
